Cancer and Pisces Trust launched its first fishing club in May 2022 at The Northern Fishing School at the award-winning Swinton Park Hotel in North Yorkshire and on its days has exclusive use of Home Lake. This man-made lake is an ideal environment for anglers of all standards and states of health being easily accessible and having shallow and gently shelving banks; it is also very well stocked with trout.
One year later and we were ready to launch our second fishing club at Holbury Lake Fishery in Hampshire. C&PT has a few specification needs for our fishing club venues.
First-and-foremost, it must be a safe environment, and in a tranquil and beautiful setting for our members to enjoy. The venue needs to be located near a Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre, so that we can recommend their brilliant cancer care services to our members but also be available for any of their visitors if they would like to try their hand at fly fishing.
The venue needs to comprise good access and facilities, and a comfortable place for all of our members and instructors to have their picnic lunch and rest if they need to take a break during their fishing session. It is crucial for C&PT to find a team of qualified instructors who are personable and enthusiastic. Our instructors need a large area of grass to start our beginners off, this activity is a really important C&PT learning block as we like to think that if we can get our beginner members to cast well on the grass without any distractions they will progress a lot faster. We all need to learn to crawl (cast) before we can walk (catch a fish!).
